Mascot for Chinese Spring Festival Gala revealed

China Central Television’s Spring Festival Gala revealed its first official mascot Wednesday.

In a post on its Sina Weibo account, CCTV Spring Festival Gala introduced Yangyang the goat, the first mascot in the 33-year history of the Spring Festival Gala, and provided his back story.

According to the story, Yangyang was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. In Chinese, Guangzhou is also known as “Yang Cheng” (“the city of goats”).

CCTV’s annual variety show has been an integral part of Spring Festival celebrations since 1984. This year’s show will air Feb. 18.
