Reciclados make music with other people’s garbage

The small town of Cateura, near Asuncion, is where Paraguay has its largest garbage dump. An estimated 15,000 tons of trash are dumped in this landfill every day.

It is also the birthplace of Reciclados, a youth orchestra that makes music with instruments built out of other people’s garbage. Their mission is to “create beauty with whatever comes into their hands.”

The orchestra was created by the musician Favio Chavez and Nicolas Gamez, a local garbage picker. Playing music allows the children of the orchestra to learn basic values and travel the world. One student says “”I don’t care that my violin is made out of recycled parts, to me, it’s a treasure.”
