The Dongfeng Race Team secured their place in yacht racing history recently by winning the third stage of the Volvo Ocean Race, making them the first Chinese team to win a leg of the world’s most prestigious offshore sailing competition.

The team completed the third-leg journey from Abu Dhabi to Sanya City in south China’s Hainan province on Jan. 27, adding a first-place finish to the two second-place spots they picked up in the previous stages.

As they rub shoulders with some of the world’s best yachters, the Chinese members of the Dongfeng said they are eager to learn from their opponents.

“Sometimes when we met mild wind, we would take a break, but foreign competitors would never do that. Their dedication and persistence are worth learning,” Liu Xue, a Chinese sailor with the Dongfeng team said.

The team led by French captain Charles Caudrelier contains six Chinese crew members. Sports officials hope the victory will pave the way for more Chinese success.
