For almost a year now, pro-Russian rebels have been fighting for independence in the eastern Ukraine provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk. Despite a truce and a tentative peace deal with Ukraine’s government last September, the war has escalated again. So far, more than 5,000 have been killed and more than 12,000 wounded and the crisis could be about to worsen as both sides battle for military advantage.

The situation has drawing increasing international attention as world leaders work for a diplomatic solution. CCTV’s Kate Parkinson reported this story from Donetsk.

The Heat interviewed Peter Voitsekhovsky, research director at the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, for a Ukrainian perspective on the conflict.

The Heat also spoke with Dmitry Babich, a political analyst for Voice of Russia radio, for a Russian view.
