Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s job is safe for now as he survived a vote to oust him as party leader and leader of the country. However the vote is just the latest indication of public dissatisfaction and an uncertain political future. CCTV’s Greg Navarro reported this story from Sydney.

If Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott was breathing a sigh of relief after surviving the fight of his political life, he did not show it.

“The liberal party has dealt with this spill motion and now this matter is behind us,” Abbott said.

The majority of fellow liberal party members voted against a motion of no confidence also known as a “leadership spill”, an Australian political term for an open parliamentary party leadership vacancy.

Abbot, who spent the morning in church, referred to the two leadership spills in the previous government which led to his rise as prime minister.

However, his first 16 months on the job have been filled with more lows than highs, including his party’s poor showing in the recent Queensland state elections, and his controversial decision to grant Australian Knighthood to England’s Prince Phillip.

His approval rating is just 35 percent.
