Fans of the Egyptian football team Zamalek clashed with police leaving at least 19 people dead and as a result, the league has been suspended indefinitely. The decision came after an urgent meeting between Egypt’s Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab and the interior, sports, and health ministers to discuss the disaster.

The latest clash was the deadliest football-related incident since the infamous Port Said disaster three years ago, and incident throws Egypt’s domestic football into disarray just when many thought the country was beginning to recover. CCTV’s Adel Mahrouky reported this story from Cairo.

Dozens killed in yet another football tragedy in Egypt. The dead started to arrive at Cairo’s central morgue minutes after the classes took place.

“What happened in the game with Enppi is a disaster. The fans were like thugs and the security were not up to the required standard. What do they allow some fans to the game; they should stick to banning fans for one more year until the country stabilizes. Al Zamalek club should have cancelled the game, the president Mortada Mansour should have gone to the scene and ended the conflict. But they didn’t care about their fans,” Aswan Resident Amr El Badry said.

Egypt’s interior ministry said over 10,000 fans clustered at the stadium gates in a corridor. Fans tried to forcefully enter and security forces dispersed them with tear gas. Most of the dead were suffocated when the crowd stampeded. Many Egyptians are holding the football authorities responsible.

The incident reminded the country of Al Ahly’s football riots that left 72 dead three years ago. Despite that, many have condemned the deaths at Al Zamalek’s riots, called for once again banning football fans from attending the games are rising.
