On the first day of the African Continental Cycling Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, the host country got off to a good start claiming all gold medals on offer. More than 30 African countries are taking part in the event. CCTV’s Dan Williams reported this story from Nelspruit, South Africa.

Daryl Impey, the first African to ever wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France prepared to do battle for the Road Championships title. Impey won the time trial title earlier in the week, but knew the team event would present an altogether different challenge.

The main challenger was expected to come from team MTN Qhubeka whicho is set to become the first fully African team to compete on the Tour de France later this year. Their rider, Louis Meintjes, won this event last year and was expected to lead the charge again this time round.

“There wasn’t much movement in the group. There was a small break in the beginning and really negative behind so being outnumbered and everyone watching me it was pretty difficult to do it on my own. I tried to force things to happen, but nobody wanted to ride with me in the end so we all lost,” Impey said.
