After the last day of Carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro many will be doing nothing but recovering from the endless parties. They still have their best snaps living on through social media, because they’ve gone ‘selfie’ crazy.
It has been happening since the advent of the camera. The selfie. Now though, it has reached phenomenon status as self-loving people everywhere have cameras on their phones which never leave their person. We’re wondering though if the phenomenon has struck Brazil even harder than anywhere else, because of Carnival and since Brazilians are among the most prolific users of both cellphones and social media.
“I’m not from Rio, I am from Sao Paulo, and here you have a moment; you can show your friends,” A woman at Carnival who didn’t give her name said. “We don’t have Carnival there. So you can just say ‘Look, I am here and you are not!'”
“I like it because it is something personal, and it is something like a moment of yours, and you have that and you can show your friends how your day is and like celebrate life, like where we are right now. What you do, and who you love,” a man at Carnival who didn’t give his name said.
These self portraits are a bit of an obsession in Rio de Janeiro and there are very few people who think that’s bad thing.
In fact, CCTV America’s Stephen Gibbs tried to find anyone who thought all this might be just a bit over the top. The organizer of the party conceded that some people may have had too much selfie exposure, but he said the selfie stick, with its more flattering angle, was giving the concept a whole new impetus.

There is something about Carnival and the selfie, that does seem a match made in heaven.
The point of Carnival after all is to have fun and also show as many people as possible how much fun you had.
