Ram fight marks first day of Chinese New Year in central China

Chinese New Year

Over 30 rams took part in a fighting match in central China’s Henan Province on Thursday for Chinese Lunar Spring Festival celebrations. The event is a tradition on the first day of the Chinese new year.

2015 marks the Year of Goat, and the activity attracted thousands of residents in the province’s Neixiang County in Nanyang City to watch.

Every head-collision was met with cheers and applause from spectators.

Li Jianhai, chairman of a local ram-fighting association said people have a misunderstanding that sheep are docile, but actually rams are very aggressive.

The match doesn’t have a winner and farmers said they send their animals to compete purely for fun.
