Chile's Ambassador to U.S. speaks to CCTV America about Chilean miracle

Over the last 30 years, Chile has been the fastest growing economy in Latin America. The income per capita of Chileans has nearly tripled, while the poverty rate has decreased by nearly 35 percent.

The International Monetary Fund, which works with over 180 countries to facilitate fiscal co-operation and encourage growth, says if Chile keeps pace, it could qualify as a “developed” country by 2018, and would make Chile the first nation in Latin America to reach that status.

Americas Now recently sat down with Chile's ambassador to the United States, Juan Gabriel Valdes. CCTV America Anchor Elaine Reyes interviewed him about Chile’s commerce, trade and social issues, as well as the upcoming political gathering, the “Summit of the Americas,” in Panama.

The so-called Chilean miracle has been achieved with a mixture of liberal economics applied by “center-left” governments, including the work of current President Michelle Bachelet.
