It’s been more than 40 years since a military coup overthrew Chile’s democratically elected president, Socialist Salvador Allende. General Augusto Pinochet was put in his place, a dictatorship that lasted for the next 17 years and defined a generation.

The political upheaval in Chile and Latin America from 1973-1990 was examined by editor and journalist Diego Fonseca.

His book, “Growing Shock” is a compilation of essays looking at the region over the past four decades from the perspective of 13 different journalists.

Elaine Reyes interviewed the Argentine author and discussed the importance of learning about the past without getting stuck in it.
