China’s aid to Ebola crisis: millions of dollars, hundreds of doctors

China has spent more than $120 million to assist relief efforts in West Africa. Hundreds of medical workers were sent to the region, with some staying for months.

Highlights:

  • Dr. Jiang Rongmeng is a leading expert in China on infectious diseases. Jiang was among China’s first batch of public health trainers on the deadly Ebola virus following a stint in Sierra Leone.
  • In November 2014, China began offering large scale public health training to West African countries stricken by Ebola. Within two months, Jiang’s team trained about 2,600 grassroots administrators and community leaders.
  • Jiang’s efforts are meant to supplement medical workers and supplies sent to treat Ebola.
  • Dr. Jiang has 20-years worth of infectious diseases experience and also worked with Chinese health authorities to design preventive measures against Ebola.
