Anti-corruption word has been mentioned in a work report of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) for the first time in decades.

“The CPPCC should work to improve the integrity of its members and continue fighting corruption,” said CPPCC Chairman Yu Zhengsheng in the annual report at the third session of the 12th CPPCC National Committee on Tuesday.

Presenting the work report of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the CPPCC, he said there were some shortcomings in last year’s work of the political advisory body. He cited the expulsion of 14 national political advisors due to corruption.

Two former vice chairmen of the CPPCC National Committee, Su Rong and Ling Jihua as well as 11 chairmen and vice chairmen of CPPCC provincial Committees have been caught in China’s anti-corruption campaign in the last two years.

The CPPCC will make more efforts in suggestions and proposals on deepening reform and development this year, Yu said.

“Deliberating and making suggestions on the formulation of the 13th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development is a priority in our work this year. We will strive to make farsighted, strategic, and targeted suggestions and proposals through Standing Committee meetings on specific topics and other means,” Yu said.

A consultative meeting will be held on deepening reform of the government review and approval system, he added.

A symposium for analyzing the macroeconomic situation will be held to improve the dynamism and comprehensive nature of economic performances in the new normal and provide information for the reference of the Communist Party of China and government in strengthening and improving regulation at the macro topics, he also said.

Yu said that surveys, studies and deliberations will be carried out on topics including promoting the development of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, improving the system of financial markets, encouraging non-public enterprises to go global, strengthening protection of property rights and intellectual property rights, deepening reform of the education, medical and healthcare systems and strengthening the prevention and control of air pollution while pursuing coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Yu also pointed out that surveys and studies will be conducted and suggestions will be provided on issues that are mostly directly of concern to people, including the development and population of poor areas, giving higher priority to communities when allocating quality medical resources, and raising the fitness level of young people.

A total of 2,227 members of the CPPCC National Committee from different sectors across the country will discuss major issues concerning China’s development during the third session of the 12th CPPCC National Committee, which is scheduled to conclude on March 13. Their recommendations will be submitted to the government.
