Here’s why the adult suicide rate is rising in the US

Insight

About 40 percent more American adults between the ages of 40 and 64 will commit suicide in the U.S. compared to 15 years ago. Suicide rates in general in the U.S. have risen in the past few years, prompting health experts to ask why.

CCTV America’s Hendrik Sybrandy filed this report from Greenwood Village, Colorado.

Highlights:

  • Over 41,000 Americans died by suicide in 2013, a number that’s climbed steadily in recent years.
  • Some experts in the field believe poor U.S. economic conditions are partly to blame for the increasing rate. This is not too different from the Greek debt crisis, which also led to jump in suicides in the country.
  • Men in particular are loathe to talk about mental health. A new website, called mantherapy.org, uses a humorous approach to help men deal with their anxiety and even suicidal thoughts.
