Police on Wednesday punished an illegal tiger breeder and others involved in the scheme, following a two-week investigation, after they discovered a dead tiger that jumped from an 11-story building in the city of Pingdu, in east China’s Shandong Province.

“We have imposed an administrative penalty on the tiger raiser according to relevant wildlife protection laws and regulations. He was fined 3,000 yuan ($478),” Man Zhenfa, director of the Pingdu Forestry Public Security Bureau said.

During the investigation, they also found another tiger alive and still in a cage on the rooftop of the building.

The raiser, who has the surnam Yang, got the two tigers from the Chashan Scenic Spot in 2014 and bred them in cages. One of the two tigers escaped and jumped off the building after being frightened by fireworks on the Chinese New Year on February 19.

Yang and the Chashan Scenic Spot had no authorization to raise a tiger, police said. The scenic spot received the two tigers from someone surnamed Sun, who died in 2012. Police have confiscated all the tigers in the scenic spot and sent them, and the other tiger that Yang kept, to a legal wild animal center in the north Chinese city of Qingdao.

Police also punished local forestry officials who failed to perform their work properly.

The case is still under investigation.
