U.S. winter weather has capital under snow and transport in parts frozen

World Today

The U.S is experiencing a paralzying winter throughout much of the nation. Snow, sleet and ice have made for a dangerous commute on the roads and in the skies for those willing to risk it.

CCTV America’s Frances Kuo filed this report from Washington, D.C.

Highlights:

  • Passengers on board a plane in New York City experienced a scary landing. The plane had just touched down at LaGuardia International Airport during a snowstorm when it skidded on the runway and slammed into a fence. It stopped just yards away from the icy East River.
  • More than 100 passengers and crew had to trek through snow as they made their way off the runway. Twenty-four people suffered injures, but no one was seriously hurt.
  • There has been little movement on the Kentucky state highway. Hundreds of drivers found themselves right in the path of a winter storm and hit a dead-end.
  • Kentucky drivers were left stranded, with some waiting for more than 12 hours.
  • The winter storm dumped up to 50 centimeters (about 1.6 feet) of snow in some regions.
  • The deep South of the U.S. experienced a combination of snow and sleet glazed roads.
  • Some neighborhoods in the nation’s capital could see up 25 centimeters (about 0.8 feet) of snow.
