One More Question for Jon Huntsman: How has China changed in recent years?

One More Question

The Heat interviewed former U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman for a discussion on the the annual Chinese legislative meetings currently underway in Beijing and the future of US-China relations. CCTV America’s Anand Naidoo asked Huntsman one more question about China’s President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to the United States and how China has changed since he was the ambassador from 2009-2011.

Huntsman said that he hopes Presidents Xi and Obama discuss a bilateral investment treaty and global collaboration on the Middle East. He also said that China and the U.S. have a more managed relationship now than just a few years ago.

“The relationship grows more complicated. As we do more and more together and as there are more and more aspects to the relationship: Economic, cultural, political, military, security. It makes for a relationship that must be managed, and it must be managed on a regular basis and managed in a way that doesn’t fall victim to just drift,” Hunstman said.

“It means you have to have a strategy and a vision behind the relationship, and I think today that is more important than ever before. You can kind of let the relationship wander in the early days because the stakes were low, today the stakes are extremely high between the United States and China because the whole world feels the implications of the US-China relationship, whether it’s strong or whether it’s weak, it really does have a spillover effect.”
