Shanghai fines Crest $1M for doctored toothpaste ad

Toothpaste producer Crest is facing a 6 million yuan (about $1 million) fine for false advertising.

According to the Shanghai Industry and Commerce Administration Bureau, an advertisement for one of Crest’s whitening products was doctored through computer software.

This marks the biggest fine ever levied by China on a charge of false advertising.

According to an official, using special effects with tools such as Photoshop is acceptable in advertising but not in a manner that distorts the actual effect of using the item.

Taiwan actor and singer Little S or Dee Hsu has been the spokesperson for the product.
