Among thousands of overturned cases in China, one stands out. It’s a rape-murder case from North China’s Inner Mongolia Region which sparked public debate. The local court has issued an apology and provided compensation, but it’s not enough to calm the families of those wrongly convicted. CCTV’s Han Peng filed this report.

Highlights:

  • In 1996, Hugjiltu was on his way to work when he found a dead woman in a public toilet.
  • He reported the case to the police with his colleague Yan Feng, only to be arrested by the police as a suspect.
  • Yan Feng, Hugjiltu’s colleague says Hugjiltu was tortured by the police.
  • Based on his own confession, Hugjiltu was convicted and executed, without any convincing physical evidence.
  • Recently, the Public Security Ministry announced that policemen who have manufactured erroneous cases will be held accountable.
