Law enforcement remains a top priority for Mexico. The country recently named new Attorney General, Arely Gomez Gonzalez. The controversial former ruling party Senator will hold Mexico’s highest law enforcement post.

Highlights:

• The attorney general’s office has faced intense public pressure following the disappearance of 43 students in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero.
• Many questioned the investigation of the disappearances, overseen by out-going, embattled Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam. He is now heading Mexico’s federal rural and urban development ministry.
• The country’s new Attorney General, Arely Gomez Gonzalez, worked as a senior staff member in Mexico’s Supreme Court and served in a number of federal justice posts over the past dozen years, including special prosecutor for electoral crimes.
• Gonzalez is surrounded by controversy and has been accused of conflict of interest because her brother, Leopoldo Gomez.
• Leopoldo Gomez is the senior news executive at Mexico’s dominant broadcast network, Televisa Critics. Political observers have said Televisa favored Enrique Pena Nieto when he was a candidate for the presidency.
• President Pena Nieto has named conservative politician, Eduardo Medina Mora, as judge on Mexico’s Supreme Court in another controversial move.
• Medina Mora served as Mexico’s ambassador to the United States. Previously, Mora was Felipe Calderon’s Attorney General. Before that he was the intelligence director of CISEN, Mexico’s version of the CIA. Mora has never been a judge.
• Legal experts point out that both Eduardo Medina Mora and Arely Gomez Gonzalez will keep their top posts in Mexico’s justice system long after Enrique Pena Nieto leaves office.
