The United States and Iran are set to begin a new round of nuclear talks in an effort to bridge their differences and facilitate a comprehensive accord between Tehran and the P5+1 states ahead of a July 1 deadline.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Lausanne on Sunday and will meet with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
CCTV’s Dan Whitehead filed this report from Lausanne.

Highlights:

  • The U.S. wants to finally close in on a deal to reduce Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.
  • The sanctions imposed on Iran cost the country estimated five to eight billion dollars a month.
  • Iran wants these sanctions lifted but it also wants to maintain some nuclear capabilities for civilian purposes.
  • John Kerry says there are still “important gaps” that need to be resolved.
  • Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will meet EU counterparts on Monday in Brussels, with talks potentially lasting well into the week in Switzerland.
