US immigration law detail causes distress for many

Insight

A loophole in a U.S. immigration law, known as the Child Citizenship Act, could mean thousands of adults adopted as children from other countries are in the US illegally. CCTV’s Chris Casquejo explains how there could be many adults at risk of being sent back to countries they don’t know.

Highlights:

  • Until 2001, when the law took effect, parents of children adopted from other countries had to apply for citizenship for their children.
  • Then the U.S. government changed the immigration law, so it only applies to those born in 1983 and after.
  • Immigration reform advocates say deportations in this kind of case are rare.
