The Heat discusses South Sudan’s civil war

The actor Forest Whitaker is a UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation. Whitaker is on his mission in South Sudan. Whitaker played a British soldier in “The Crying Game” and Idi Amin, in “The Last King of Scotland”. He is also a humanitarian. As UNESCO’s Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, Whitaker is working to bring peace to South Sudan.

Tens of thousands have died in the African nation’s on-going civil war. Over two million people are in dire need of food. About 12,000 are forced to fight as child soldiers.

Forest Whitaker recently returned from his latest trip to South Sudan.

“Thousands of young people go without food and basic education,” Whitaker said. “Perhaps worst of all, walking through the cities I saw children soldiers wearing military military uniforms and carrying guns.”

The Heat interviewed Forest Whitaker for more insight into the current violence in South Sudan. Whitaker is the CEO of the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative.

The Heat also interviewed Garang Diing Akuong on the civil-war in South Sudan. He is South Sudan’s Ambassador to the United States.
