Elderly in China said to fuel child obesity problem

World Today

Childhood obesity has become a growing concern in the most populous country in the world. University of Birmingham published a report, it shows that China’s children who were looked after by their grandparents are more than twice as likely to be overweight. CCTV’s Wu Lei filed this report from Guangzhou city.

Highlights:

  • After around 5 years of research, Dr. Li and her colleagues are now launching a special pilot project called CHIRPY Dragon at primary schools in Guangzhou. The main target of this program is not the children, but their grandparents.
  • With the support of the Guangdong provincial center for Disease control and prevention, the team also plans to improve the nutritional quality and taste of school meals.  This program will also encourage off-campus physical activities that involve both parents and children.
