China holds green energy tests in bid for 2022 Winter Olympics

A northern city in Heibei province is looking to the wind and sun for energy in a joint venture with Beijing. It’s part of China’s bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2022.

CCTV’s Ning Hong filed this report from Zhang Jiakou City.

Highlights:

  • In Qijiazhuang village of Zhangjiakou city, 30 households can now use power generated by solar panels. This is a new measure aiming to provide clean energy to rural areas in the city.
  • The “Photovoltaic corridor” project aims to build solar power stations along the highway from Beijing to Zhangjiakou.
  • The power the station generates in a year could cut coal consumption by 15,000 tons. This is just one of the promises China has made in its bid to host the Winter Olympics.
