Changing traditions addresses contemporary concerns during Qingming Festival

World Today

The upcoming Qingming Festival is an important holiday for Chinese families to honor their ancestors and deceased relatives. One funeral home in Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province, is offering new options to help ease modern concerns. Ning Hong filed this report from Hebei Province.

Highlights:

  • Shenyanshan is the second funeral home in the country that offers decomposable urns. So far, thirty families have chosen to use this new burial method.
  • According to Chinese customs, families must ensure their relatives’ needs are taken care of the same in death as in life.
  • During the Qingming Festival, fake money and paper houses are burned as a tribute to the dead. This centuries-old tradition has become increasingly burdensome in modern times.
