Dr. Eric Finzi is a board certified dermasurgeon who spends his free-time creating beautiful works of art. For Dr. Finzi, his two passions are merely tools for making a difference in people’s lives.

“My scientific work in medicine started in art,” Finzi said. “I was working on a series of paintings of mental hospital patients from the 1880’s. Riveting pictures of their faces, strong facial expressions; you just see the angst in their brow.”

While painting people with mental illnesses Finzi took an interest in researching depression. This led him mixing his practices and interests together.

“You should empower yourself to utilize all of your tools, all of your talents and all of your interests and they all cross feed and help each other,” he said. “If I just keep my eyes open and think hopefully I can contribute something to helping to alleviate human suffering through research, through being open to new ideas.”

On this week’s Close-Up, we visit Dr. Finzi at his medical practice, as well as his very unique art studio, to get a glimpse of how two very different worlds can collide to create meaningful works of lasting beauty.
