China to double number of general practice doctors by 2020

It’s a target that means there will be at least two to three general practitioners for each 10,000 citizens nationwide. China plans to double its number of these doctors by 2020. Shanghai is one of the latest cities to have started dedicated general practitioner training. CCTV’s Mi Jiayi filed this report from Shanghai.

Global health care is vastly uneven around the world. According to the WHO, the United States spends nearly $9,000 per pesron, France spends about $4,700, China spends about $350 per capita, and Myanmar spends about $20 per person.

Highlights:

  • With a population of 25 million people and growing, Shanghai would need some 7,500 or more general doctors to double the number of these doctors that already exist. That’s 2,500 more GP’s than the city has now.
  • This year the government is considering a pay rise for GP’s working at the local level. Hospitals are also providing more opportunities for attracting young general doctors, including additional specialist training and overseas study.
