Golf returns to Olympic Games for the first time since 1904

Global Business

The 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio will see Golf make a return to the games. The popular sport has been sidelined from the Olympics for over a hundred years, but a brand new golf course built in Rio de Janeiro for the games is causing controversy. CCTV America’s Stephen Gibbs filed this report from Rio de Janeiro.

Highlights:

  • For months, a group of protesters have been camped outside the construction zone. They have multiple complaints. One involves the irrigation of the course, in an area that’s already facing water shortages.
  • There have been claims, in the Brazilian media, that investors behind an apartment building project around the construction site, are set to make an easy profit of more than ten times their initial outlay.
