Winery doing its part to fight Rhino poaching

World Today

A winery in Cape Town, South Africa has taken the fight against rhino poaching to its cellar doors. Mount Vernon is producing a red and white wine that will allow consumers to become more active in the country’s fight against poachers. A portion the proceeds from every sale goes directly to funding anti-poaching activities in the country. CCTV’s Travers Andrews filed this report.

Highlights:

  • South Africa’s rhino population faces the threat of extinction if poaching levels are not brought drastically under control. A record 1,215 rhinos were killed by poachers last year alone.
  • Mount Vernon wine farm has produced a wine called Rhino Tears. The two cultivars being produced are a red shiraz-cabernet-pinotage blend and a white fruit driven Chenin Blanc.
  • Funds from every bottle sold will be allocated to honorary rangers tasked with spearheading the fight against poaching.
  • The winery currently produces about 10, 000 bottles of Rhino Tears every year, with plans to increase that and export to markets overseas.
