Italy struggles with influx of migrants

Global Business

Italy continues to struggle with a massive influx of migrants and refugees, who attempt to cross the Mediterranean and try to reach Europe. Thousands have been arriving on the island of Sicily in southern Italy as the situation is becoming more complex by the day. Italy says the solution to this crisis can only be resolved by international aid. CCTV’s Filio Kontrafouri filed this report from Catania in Sicily.

Details:

  • Europe has yet to respond to Italy’s request for help and present specific policies to tackle the influx on its borders.
  • Italy is a port of entry to Europe and some Italian officials have claimed that its northern neighbors have not yet grasped the severity of the problem because it is not on their doorstep.
  • The reception centers in Sicily are already packed with thousands of migrants from Africa, most of who use war-torn Libya as a transit point to come to Italy.
  • Italian Prime Minister, Mateo Renzi, said Friday that ending the chaos in Libya is necessary for the solution of the migration crisis.
