Millions vote in Cuban municipal elections

Millions of Cubans went to the polls on Sunday. The municipal elections are the first rung on the island’s political ladder. There are 27,000 candidates to fill 12,500 seats. CCTV’s Michael Voss filed this report.

The government has announced that it is preparing a new electoral law, the first change in almost 25 years.

  • Elections for the National Assembly, Cuba’s congress, take place every five years.
  • Deputies are pre-selected and voters have no choice there is only one candidate for each seat.
