The magic of Uruguay’s Murga

Carnival is spectacular, colorful and vibrant across Latin America. It shares many common roots and themes in countries across the region, but each carnival is unique. In Uruguay, for example, festivities last for 40 days, making it the longest carnival in the world.

Urban legend has it that Uruguay’s carnival is more popular than the country’s number one sport, selling more tickets in just over a month than football matches do in the whole year. One of the carnival’s biggest attractions is the Murga, which is a form of comedic theater, mixed with social critique and, most of all, music.

Americas Now correspondent Joel Richards traveled to Montevideo, where he was able to follow closely a legendary company called Patos Cabreros as they got up on the stages to compete in the Carnival competition. In the process, he discovered the magic of Murga.
