Hong Kong unveils 2017 election plan

World Today

Hong Kong has announced its long-awaited political-reform package. CCTV’s Li Jiejun filed this report.

Highlights:

  • Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying says it is the wish of both the central and the SAR governments as well as the people of Hong Kong to have ‘one person, one vote’ in 2017.
  • The chief executive candidates would be selected by a nominating committee of 1,200 members.
  • The committee members would then vote on the nominations and the top two or three, who can gain the most support, would qualify for the city-wide ‘one man, one vote’ election.
  • Whichever candidate gains the most support, from the five million eligible voters, would win.
