Google announces new cell phone service 'Project FI'

Google is branching out into yet another area this time the cellphone carrier business through its mobile phone service called Project Fi. The Mountain View search giant is flexing its technology muscle in hopes of lowering cell phone bills and bringing in more internet traffic. Highlights:

  • Google’s Vice President of Communications Nick Fox introduced Project Fi through a blog post and video.
  • Google Fi claims to move mobile users seamlessly to the best wifi and cellular networks wherever they go. It also slashes prices, with a basic plan of $20 a month that includes talk, text and international coverage and then an extra $10 a month per gigabyte of data.
  • For any unused data, Google credits your bill. Right now, the system is only compatible with Google’s Nexus 6 phone.
  • Google has teamed up with Sprint and T-Mobile, the nation’s number three and four wireless carriers to run traffic on their networks. The partnership is seen by industry insiders as yet another attempt by Google to disrupt business models of the top two – AT & T and Verizon.
