Citizens scurry money out of banks in Greece

The European Central Bank is taking more steps to keep the Greek economy from spinning out of control. It’s now considering tighter restrictions on some lending by Greek banks. The ECB is trying to head off a bank run and restore some confidence in the country’s financial industry. CCTV’s Eirini Zarkadoula filed this report from Athens.

Highlights: 

  • In the midst of the dramatic negotiation between the Greek government and its creditors, many Greek depositors have pulled euros out of the banks and saving them in your homes, in fear of  Grexit or capital control.
  • Greeks have lost their confidence in the country’s banking system. In January alone, which coincided with the parliamentary election, they withdrew 23 billion euros.
