CCTV America’s Karina Huber interviewed Dickson Despommier, a Columbia University professor and a leading proponent of vertical farming, a method of farming that allows crops to be grown indoors and in a more space saving manner.

Huber asked Despommier one more question about what the future of vertical farming will look like. Despommier, who wrote “The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century” which was recently translated into Mandarin Chinese, said that vertical farms can be placed anywhere.

One more question for Dickson Despommier: What is vertical farming’s future?

CCTV America's Karina Huber interviewed Dickson Despommier, a Columbia University professor and a leading proponent of vertical farming and asked him one more question about what the future of vertical farming will look like. Here's his response.

“A vertical farm is one of those things… A) Employment. B) Food. C) Environmentally friendly. I’ll take two! So there are lots of places inside the city proper,” he said.

Despommier said that vertical farms can be integrated around buildings where people live and in stand alone buildings dedicated solely to housing vertical farms.

“Everything is possible. Look at how many different kinds of cell phones there are, look at how many different kinds of cars there are, look at how many different kinds of television sets there are,” Despommier said.

“You’re only limited by your own imagination, so if you can’t invision it, that’s okay, someone else will… So this is what’s happening now. This is the thrill of watching this unfold.”
