Turkey reviews preparedness following Nepal quake

Many countries are reviewing their earthquake preparations following the deadly tremor that struck Nepal. Turkey, in particular, is on edge. Earth scientists say Istanbul which is home to 15 million people is at high risk of experiencing a large-scale quake soon. CCTV’s Natalie Carney filed this report from Istanbul.

Highlights:

  • According to the World Bank, more than 100,000 people have died and 600,000 buildings destroyed as a result of earthquakes across Turkey during the 20th century.
  • The main fracture zone is called The North Anatolian fault, but it has 2 branches. One goes through the south of Marmara sea and the other to the northern part.
  • In 1999, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake rocked the Turkish province of Koceli. More than 17,000 were killed and at least 30,000 homes destroyed.
