The Heat

There is a major parliamentary election in the United Kingdom. And, it could be the closest there in decades.

After weeks of campaigning and TV debates by political leaders in the United Kingdom, it’s now the voters’ turn. They head to the polls on Thursday to vote in what is being called one of the most important elections in a generation in the UK. Could there be a new prime minister? What are some of the major issues And, will the result have an impact outside Britain’s borders

CCTV correspondent Richard Bestic provided this update from London.

The Heat began its discussion on the elections with these experts:

  • From London, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown. She is a columnist for the British newspaper, The Independent and a frequent radio and television commentator on politics.
  • Simon Marks is the president and chief correspondent of Feature Story News.
  • From London, Joe Twyman. He is the head of political research at YouGov and he provides political analysis for British and international media.

In 2014, voters in Scotland narrowly decided to stay in the UK after a referendum on independence. But, Scottish voters may put that issue back on the agenda when they vote on Thursday.

After the break, The Heat continued its discussion on the role Scotland will play in these elections with Robin McAlpine. He was a leading activist in the Scottish independence campaign and is now director of The Common Weal, an activist network.
