California isn't the only place that's dealing with severe drought. The shortage of water is a global concern and that has industries looking for ways to do business using less water.  The apparel industry is a huge water user second only to agriculture. May Lee filed this report from Los Angeles.

Highlights:

  • Levi’s  Water-Less program, which started four years ago, has already saved a billion liters, or 265 million gallons, of water thanks to new, high-tech method much as Ozone Wash, a waterless and bleach-free process.
  • In China, farmers who followed its methods reduced water use by 23 percent in 2013. And In both India and Pakistan, there was a 14 percent drop in water use.
  • Active Tunnel Infusion works. The exact design of an apparel order is printed on donor paper, which is then put through the machine with synthetic fabric.Using photon and thermal energy, tunnels are created in the fibers. Dye is pumped inside the tunnels, which are then sealed locking the dye inside. The process takes just 35 seconds.
