Iraq launches initiative to gain tribal leader support

World Today

Iraq’s Shiite Prime Minister tried to enhance security and broaden stability. Haider Al-Abadi has started to hold talks with Sunni tribal leaders. As CCTV’s Wisam Al Bayati reported, it comes after years of disagreement over the power-sharing process in Iraq.

Highlights:

  • The Iraqi government has reached out to tribal leaders in Mosul and Anbar Provinces to gain their support in its on-going battle against the terrorist group ISIL.
  • The move comes as the Iraqi army continues to fight against the Islamic State in different parts of the country. Lawmakers in Mosul and Anbar are not in favor of allowing the Iran-backed Shiite militias to enter their provinces.
  • The tribal leaders support the decision to keep the militias out of the provinces to prevent sectarian violence. They believe Iraqi troops should be used to liberate ISIL-held territories.
