In Hong Kong, legislators are due to vote on a crucial electoral reform bill in about a month’s time. Ahead of that vote, a public petition has been launched by one of Hong Kong’s main activist groups. They want to show the scale of support for the bill, which will give residents the right to vote for a new chief executive. CCTV’s Li Jiejun filed this report.

Highlights:

  • On Saturday, Hong Kong’s Alliance for Peace and Democracy launched a petition, calling on the public to show its support for a bill to bring in “one man, one vote” in 2017.
  • Over the next 9 days, residents can add their names to the list at hundreds of street booths.
  • If legislators pass the reform, Hong Kong residents will be able to elect their Chief Executive in 2017 for the first time.
