Somalia to form three commissions prior to 2016 elections

World Today

Somalia says it will establish three commissions to ensure a free-and-fair election next year. The judicial, electoral and demarcation commissions will go hand-in-hand with constitutional reforms. CCTV’s Mohamed Hirmoge filed this report.

Highlights:

  • Somalia goes to the vote in just under 16 months and the international community is closely watching.
  • A day before the cabinet formally endorsed these commissions, the chairperson of the Constitutional Review Commission, Asho Gelle Dirie resigned over what she called meddling.
  • Diplomats say a lot needs to be done to beat the September 2016 election timetable.
