Economic impact of earthquakes on India

Insight

A new United Nations report shows that every year natural disasters cost India more than any other country on the planet. Some experts say that’s because the country is not spending enough on things like early-warning systems. CCTV’s Shweta Bajaj has Insight.

Highlights:

  • Statistics show nearly a third of the country’s landmass is at risk from severe earthquakes. Twelve percent of the country is subject to flooding. Seventy-six percent of the coastline is in a cyclone and tsunami-zone.
  • India said it has allocated $9.5 billion for disaster management for the six years between 2015 to 2020
  • The United Nations disaster risk assessment report for 2015 says natural disasters cost India around $9.8 billion every year alone.
