World Today

The European Union is set to unveil what’s expected to be its most comprehensive proposals on migration so far. The moves will include a controversial quota system and military action against smugglers operating from Libya’s shores. CCTV’s Jack Barton filed this report from Brussels.

Highlights:

  • Almost three and a half thousand migrants and asylum seekers died trying to reach Europe in 2014
  • This year about 2000 have already drowned attempting the perilous Mediterranean crossing.
  • EU leaders will discuss the proposals at a summit late June by which time thousands more people will have attempted the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean.
