Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Xi’an, capital city of Shaanxi Province, on Thursday afternoon.

Modi is visiting China at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Xi said during his visit to India in last September, China and India reached an important consensus on promoting the bilateral strategic partnership of cooperation and forging a closer partnership of development.

China-India relations are experiencing stable development and facing broad prospects, Xi said, adding that he believed Modi’s visit will push forward the bilateral strategic partnership to achieve new progress.

Xi said both China and India are facing historical opportunities of national rejuvenation, and the bilateral relations has huge potential and objective conditions for greater development, thus the two sides should forge a closer partnership of development.

Xi proposed that China and India should develop relations from a strategic view eying long-term development, promote strategic cooperation in international and regional affairs, and make joint efforts to make international order develop towards a fairer and more rational direction.

Xi said the two countries should realize complementation and mutual support of higher level, continue to be “double engines” for regional and world economy. Xi said China encourages its enterprises to invest in India.

Xi proposed to increase mutual trust, keep differences and problems under control to avoid disturbance to general situation of relations.

Xi said both countries should encourage strengthening exchanges of various circles, think tank, media and youth to promote a comprehensive and multi-level people-to-people cooperation.

Xi said China is willing to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity with India and other South Asian countries.

Modi said he was glad to visit China. He cited his trip in some historical places of interest in Xi’an and spoke highly of the cultural exchanges between the two ancient civilizations.

He said India sees China as a great neighbor and has been making efforts to enhance mutual trust and strategic communications, expand cooperation in various fields, deepen people-to-people exchanges and properly handle differences. India is willing to make joint efforts with China to lift bilateral relations to a higher level, he said.

Modi said India hopes for closer economic and trade relations with China and closer cooperation with China within the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank, which he said will play an important role in the development of economy and society for relevant countries.

India welcomes more investment from China, and is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in international and regional affairs, as well as communication and cooperation in multilateral fields, so that to promote a fairer and rational international order, Modi said.

He said India and China have been offering aids and support to relevant countries in South Asia. China’s Belt and Road initiative and India’s connectivity construction in South Asia will bring more development and prosperity in the region, and India hopes for more relevant cooperation with China.

This is the first China visit for Modi.

On Friday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and top legislator Zhang Dejiang will meet Modi in Beijing.
