Luxury brands sue Alibaba for sellling alleged fake goods

Global Business

Alibaba is once again in the hot seat facing allegations of supporting the sale of counterfeit goods on its sites.  The issue has been a thorn in its side this year and is one of the reasons the stock has not been performing well.  It’s now facing a lawsuit from the owner of some of the world’s top brands. CCTV America’s Karina Huber filed this report from New York.

Highlights:

  • Experts allege counterfeit goods are rampant on Alibaba sites. The Chinese government recently accused the company of not doing enough to get rid of them.
  • Paris-based Kering – the French luxury goods company that owns Gucci, Yves St. Laurent and Balenciaga – has just filed a suit accusing Alibaba of encouraging and profiting from the sale of knockoffs.
  •  Alibaba says the suit is without merit and is vowing to fight it: A company statement reads: “Kering Group has chosen the path of wasteful litigation instead of the path of constructive cooperation.”
