US-China South China Sea tensions escalate

World Today

Tensions are growing between Beijing and Washington over China’s construction of islands in the South China Sea. Again, Beijing has reaffirmed its rights and sovereignty over the region, in response to a warning from the Pentagon in Washington. CCTV America’s Yang Zhao files the report.

More details:

  • Five trillion dollars of shipping trade passes through the South China Sea each year.
  • The recent construction of two lighthouses on Huayang Reef and Chigua Reef — part of China’s Nansha Islands — became a main point of dispute.
