It’s been a long time coming, but the United States removed a significant barrier with Cuba, an important step toward reestablishing diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Highlights:

• Cuba is no longer on the terrorist list. Top U.S. lawmakers say embassies could open in Havana, and Washington within a matter of weeks.
• U.S. President Barack Obama asked that Cuba be taken off the terrorist list 45 days ago. The U.S. Congress had the past six weeks to fight removal, but chose not to.
• Ronald Reagan was U.S. president back in 1982 when Cuba found itself on the list for allegedly supporting terrorist activities in Latin America and Africa. But the most punishing trade embargo under the Helms Burton act remains. That means until the U.S. Congress ends the embargo, economic benefits for Cuba are limited.
