Internet artists revamp entertainment industry in China

World Today

Instant voice and video communications technology is allowing thousands of young people in China to turn themselves into Internet entertainers. They produce their own live shows and can make a decent living.
CCTV-America’s Feng Xin files the report from Guangzhou.

Highlights:

  • YY earned more than 3.6 billion yuan, or 590 million US dollars in 2014, more than half of which came from the virtual gifts that fans purchased from the platform.
  • Other instant video communities such as 9158 are also catching up with YY’s user numbers and are going beyond the 10 million monthly user threshold as well.
